Kat and Cara - Contact@BiblioBabes.ca
The two of us met when we found out we were neighbors in the same pretentious condo; we quickly bonded over vegan Caesars, vampire smut, and glorious, wonderful books. Rip-roaring times were had, as well as nights of debauchery and drunken sewing parties. But time passed, as it is wont to do, and both of us moved to new dwellings. But the friendship and love of books keep us together.

I'm a reader. It's my thing. I've carted books around in my suitcases to summer camp, in my backpack to school, and in my purse to work. I'm never without reading material of some kind. I'd feel... naked. But not good "it's a summer afternoon and I'm going for a swim" naked. Naked in public naked. Awkward!
My mom really likes to read, and I see that as my introduction to the vast, awesome literary world. Thanks, mom! But because my mom loved horror, true crime, and erotica, I was reading books that were a little... inappropriate for my age group. From reading "Kids Who Kill" on the bus at 10, to reading Stephen King's "Desperation" at 12, I've been freaking out adults with my reading material my whole life.
I'll read just about anything, but my love is horror - the bloodier and more disgusting the better!

Not only do I love books and literature, I love tattoos as well. I've been lucky enough to have several talented artists work on me, and I can wear my heart on my sleeve, so to speak, when it comes to the written word and art.
My stack of books is fairly self explanatory: I love stacks. Duh.
The dude is a little more complex. It's a portrait of Henry Bemis from the Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last". Watch it. I love this man, and he's the character I identify with most, living or dead, real or fictional. Also? I zombified him. Because it's that much more tragic, and I just straight-up love zombies, too.

Besides these two rather large tattoos, I also have a white oleander on my left hand, because the book White Oleander rocked my britches. The bee on my left hand is an illustration from the Kit Williams Untitled Bee Book. The idea behind it is mind blowing, and the art has enchanted me ever since the day I rescued it from the children's section of the used book store I worked at.
My most recent tattoo is a phrase from the classic Margaret Atwood novel, The Handmaid's Tale. If you've read it, you know what it means. If you haven't read it, DO IT. I won't spoil it by telling you.
I'll be adding more tattoos soon enough. Just you wait. Seriously. I have to wait too, so it's only fair.

Books. The word makes my heart flutter, my nether region tingle and my wallet cry out for mercy. In the last few years I have more than made up for my bookless adolescence. It's not that my parents didn't try, they have always been voracious readers, it's just that books were never able to hold my attention for more than a few days... or hours... In retrospect I should have realized that that was a sign of bigger issues, but now that I'm older - in age and not maturity - I am fascinated by all the book world has to offer.
Paranormal romance books are what got me hooked on reading. You see, I had NO IDEA this genre of books existed or that I would love it so much. It turns out that it wasn't that I didn't like books, or have the attention span to commit, it was that I hadn't found the type of books that turned my crank.
Since then I have found a few other genres that I simply love: Romance, Literotica, First Nations and LGBT stories, books about drugs or spiritual journeys and literally anything dark, freaky and twisted. I also collect the classics and throw them in the mix to spice things up. But I read to escape so anything too real or heavy is hard for me to trudge through. Now that I have found what I love to read I embrace it unapologetically,
get swept away in all their juicy details, and then share it all with you in my reviews.

A little more about me....
Like Kat, I also love tattoos. You can see most of mine on the site here and there. All of them have meaning and are original pieces. I love vegan cooking and baking and eating vegan cooking and baking. I can speak Japanese. I like British TV, 80's movies and music and Buffy and Angel. I collect books, and like anything Frankenstein, owl or unicorn related.

Cara's top 5 books to save in case of fire
In the face of impending disaster and destruction, the following 5 books would be under my arm along with my furry babies and, if there is room, my husband..... 1. A Wrinkle In Time - Madeleine L'Engle. A young reader's novel that could ignite the imagination of even the most stagnant adult minds. This book was my first step into the world of science fiction and for that I will always be eternally grateful! 2. Narcissus is Chains - L.K. Hamilton. Ahhh, L.K.Hamilton, how I want to lick your brain in appreciation! Throughout this AMAZING series, this book was the climax of all climaxes, literally. Hot, sexy, steamy, graphic, what more could a girl and a series need or want!? How about five men and one bad ass vampire slayer.... yes please. 3. The Handmaid's Tale- Margaret Atwood. This book creeped the fuck out of me and yet I hung on to every word. SO well written, eerie, and did I mention creepy? I loved how uncomfortable and strange I felt while reading it. Just an amaaaaazing book. 4. Lover Unbound- (Book 5 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series) - J.R. Ward J.R.Ward created such an incredibly dark and tortured world for the Brothers in this series. Of all the books so far, this one had the most impact on me. So much torture and anguish, heartache and suffering. Delicious emotions that tore at my heart. "Death will find you on a mountain, and as the wind comes upon you, so shall you be carried away." Amen. 5. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- Douglas Adams. It can't be all sex, time travel and torture, and for this reason my last book would be The Hitchhiker's Guide. A classic, yes, but also classically HILARIOUS and fabulous. I laughed so hard I cried, as Mr. Adam's very typical British humour is to die for. I loved every dry, gritty piece of irony in this book, from the plot to the names of characters. So this is my list of fantastic five! It was very difficult to choose, a list of 10 would've been much easier! And on that note, "So long and thanks for all the fish!" xx Cara | Kat's top 5 books to save in case of fire
It’s the middle of the night and the zombie apocalypse is upon us. I’ve got my ferret, my food, and my fresh undies. Now I need some reading material… but what five books do I take? After some tough deliberation, and the certainty that I’d be able to hit libraries and bookstores for the more common stuff, I’d ultimately choose… Whatever I’m reading at the time – Nothing leaves me more unsatisfied than a book unfinished. The Annotated Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov and Alfred Appel Jr. – Not only is it beautifully written and utterly fascinating, it’s also the most complicated and multi-faceted book I’ve ever read, so I’ll always learn something new from it. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk – My particular copy is autographed out to me, so it makes me feel like a big man to have it. Also, I still haven’t read it, so I really should get on that; I hear it’s kind of badass. The Child Thief by Brom – It’s one of those big, gnarly books that you can get a lot of mileage out of due to the gigantic size of it, and while it’s a familiar story (we all know Peter Pan, right?) it’s written with adults in mind… adults who like swearing and gratuitous violence! Last of all… well, I figure if I can grab one book, I can grab a handful, so I’d scoop up an armload of my horror anthologies – Because I have a short attention span and can get just about anything I might be in the mood for out of them. If you consider that cheating, than to round it all out I’d grab The Season of Passage by Christopher Pike – It’s got everything: space travel, romance, adventure, aliens, and ridiculous amounts of blood. And somehow, I always wind up with a sense that I’ve somehow learned an important lesson when I’ve finished reading it. There you have it… my current emergency survival kit of books! Kat's top 7 favorite books (in no particular order): 1. Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov 2. The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood 3. The Last Unicorn - Peter S. Beagle 4. The Season of Passage - Christopher Pike 5. White Oleander - Janet Fitch 6. The Thief of Always - Clive Barker 7. The Beach - Alex Garland Kat's favorite authors: 1. Stephen King 2. V. C. Andrews (the real one) 3. Christopher Pike 4. Scott Smith 5. Alex Garland Kat's favorite genres: Horror Post-Apocalyptic Scenarios |
