It's a sad sad Tuesday May 8th, because Maurice Sendak - he of the skilled writerly ways and epic quotes - passed away early this morning.
Maurice was the shiz, and you can read our previous article on him HERE.

RIP, Maurice Sendak.  Now you're in writer Heaven.  Which is like regular Heaven, but with more booze and yelling.  And hookers.  I'm pretty sure on that.

We've ranted and raved about Martin Lastrapes and his book Inside the Outside, many many many times before. Well, we have heard it through the grapevine that he is working on a new novel *squeal* and that Exciting Press has signed him to a deal for his short fiction *Congrats!!*

If you haven't read his book yet, shame on you! But you have time to redeem yourselves by buying and reading it already, sheesh. The Kindle version is even on sale, now you have no excuses.

Exciting Press has written a piece on him that you should also check out. The BiblioBabes are even mentioned in it!! Thanks for the love Martin!

K Bannerman is a Canadian author whose book, The Firs Song, I read, reviewed and loved. Her new book Bucket of Blood is out and I'm very excited to read and review it!

"Lizzie's mother is dead, and left in the care of her prim older sister, the 15-year-old fears her carefree ways are over. But when tragedy strikes again, Lizzie discovers a sinister web of lies and deception, of murders past and present. Fierce resentments and racial tensions boil beneath the illusion of civilization. Soon, Lizzie finds herself ensnared in a secret that stretches from the opium dens of British Columbia and the alleys of San Francisco to the jungles of Panama and beyond -- and it's a secret that the murderer will do anything to protect."

Below is a clip of K Bannerman reading an excerpt from her new book. Enjoy! Xx

I love Anne Rice. Not only is she an INCREDIBLE author, but she is an exceptional human being.
Here is her talking to George Strombolopolous about the current vampires and werewolves in TV and cinema:

As most of you know, every month we celebrate our love of books by giving a FREE BOOK to the winner of our Book Revolution. Anyone who submits a picture of themselves with their favourite book is entered, and we send the winner one of our most loved novels. This month it is Clive Barker's The Thief of Always. If you are interested in entering, send your picture to Contact@BiblioBabes.ca.
This next picture is our third entry for February. It is from one of our favourite peeps and long time supporter ANDREW!

"Here's my current read. "Fun & Games" by Duane Swierczynski. Its the first book in a trilogy. Its a fun, easy, fast read. It reminds me of early James Ellroy. Its set in modern day Los Angeles, and opens up with a car chase. Its about an ex-cop who now takes housesitting jobs for those who live in the Hollywood Hills. He get mixed up with a woman targeted by a hit squad who murder people by making their deaths appear accidental. Its an action movie in literary form, and I'm enjoying it very much. I'm looking forward to reading the second book."
We love you Andrew! Thank you for the picture!

So a while back we read an amazing book Inside the Outside
Picture
Both Kat and wrote reviews praising it and continue to urge people to read it (do it!). As we soon found out, the author, Martin Lastrapes, was as badass as his book.

Truth.

And so we have kept in touch with him, via Facebook and Twitter and are very happy for all of his many successes.

So the other day he tagged us in one of his Facebook posts. I opened it today and this is what I saw:

*Peeing in excitement*
In a talk about being an Indie Author he gave The BiblioBabes a shout out!
WTF!
Life is good man, Life is good.
*Fist Pump*

Last year, Cara and I were sent a book called Inside the Outside by Martin Lastrapes.  And we were TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY.  Seriously, check out our reviews HERE and HERE, and then buy the book HERE.  We promise you won't be disappointed, and you can thank us later when you've finished reading and your mind is likewise blown.
Not only is Martin Lastrapes a fantastic writer, he's actually a cool dude as well.  He's witty, friendly, and ridiculously down to Earth.  He's kept in contact with us, and he even sent us signed copies of his book.  Can you tell we love him?
So today, as I was checking out his site, I came across a post he had written called "An Indie Author's Manifesto" - holy shit.  I'm not an author, but I totally get this, and it got me thinking.

As an avid book reader (book devourer may be a more appropriate moniker) I had my perceptions of books.  Lots of hype?  It must be tight.  Indie Published?  It should be... flushed-ish?  Christ, that's not even a word.  I was young and stupid, give me a break, alright?
Then I started working for a fairly well known book store in my early 20's, and I learned a little bit about the book world.  For every 10 books we had to hype (I must have worn that damned Da vinci Code t-shirt for MONTHS) only a couple of them really appealed to me ("Why aren't we talking about Angels & Demons?  It's so much better!  Wait, we're waiting for the movie to come out before we hype it?  Oh.  Christ.") and I started looking more closely at what we had to offer.  I fell in love with books I never even would have heard of if I didn't work at a book store.  I read them just a voraciously as the copies of bestsellers the staffers were loaned so we could hype them even more ("Why YES!  I DID just read The Da Vinci Code!  It was a tour-de-force, a thrill ride from page one, and a complex puzzle I just couldn't put down!  May I also recommend Angels & Demons?  No, it's isn't The Da Vinci Code, but... it's by the same author!  Just think!  You'll be the envy of all your friends if you have the leg up on them!  I hear Tom Hanks is in talks right now for the production on the movie!"  Yes, I was a little shifty when it came to sending people home with books I loved.  Shoot me.) and ultimately I came to the conclusion that I would have to make my own decisions regarding what I thought were incredible books, and Heather and her Picks could take a hike (No offense Heather, it's just that your Picks seem to be either overly heartwarming... or overstock).
However, when we first started getting BiblioBabes off the ground, I found a little of my old uneducated book bias creeping back in.  We began getting submissions from authors who wanted us to read their books.  And the way I saw it was, "If they need us, total nobodies who cuss like sailors and flash out goodies like it was Mardi Gras, to get their books out there, there must be something wrong with what they're offering."  I had a pile of files that I was too scared to read because I didn't want to tear some nice human being, who had taken the time to contact us, and their work, to shreds.
And then Cara mentioned how much she was loving Inside the Outside.  So I picked it up, fell in love, and realized I was being a callous asshole who needed to pull my head out of my ass so I could read some goddamned books.
I could go on and on about how much I loved Inside the Outside (and I do in my review) but my point is, I was sent a book, totally out of the blue, that was one of my best reads ALL YEAR.  And when I finished that one, I started the next, and for the most part, I've generally been sent good (and sometimes great) books.  And I realized that just because a book is independantly  suck.  Especially when compared to some of the recent bestsellers that get hyped like a motherbitch:

Not to say I don't love me some Snooki, but I've read some celebrity "written" books, and they tend to read like my 11th grade diary.  Ahem.
Basically, I can see where Martin is coming from in his manifesto, and it's incredibly interesting to see that point of view; from the other side of the fence, as it were.
So read "An Indie Author's Manifesto" and see if it doesn't get you thinking...

Twitter has yet again reunited us with a long lost sister. Ok, so we may not have shared a womb, but she definitely shares our same dark, sexy, twisted, did I mention sexy, mind.
Her name is @Piper Trace
Not only is she the author of some naughty romance books but she also does crafts. TRASHY CRAFTS! Penis and vagina crafts. Wow do we love her!

I know I am looking forward to reading her books, taking a long, cold shower and then writing some reviews!

I love Graphic Novels. This is the next one on my list. Looks fantastic and it's part 1 in a series. Finally, something to look forward to!
Love and eternal gratefulness to the person who can find this in hardcopy or EPUB format. Unfortunately I do not have a Kindle and may cry myself to sleep tonight. To add some motivation, I will do an extra saucy Naked Reading Sunday with this book if someone can find it for me.....
Check out the book HERE. Daniel J. Rowe has a sports blog where he also reviews books!
